About us
Our story
Berton Vineyards began as a dream in 1996 when Bob and Cherie Berton planted their first vines on the rugged, beautiful slopes of High Eden in the Barossa Valley. Despite the harsh, dry conditions, they nurtured their Shiraz and Chardonnay vines, eventually creating the award-winning Bonsai Shiraz. Today, the vineyard stands as a testament to their perseverance and passion, producing exceptional wines that capture the spirit of this unique region.
In 2005, the Berton’s took a bold step by acquiring a historic winery in Yenda, New South Wales. This move allowed us to expand our craft, processing grapes not just from our own vineyard but from some of Australia's most renowned wine regions, including Coonawarra and Adelaide Hills. Every grape is carefully selected and every batch meticulously fermented to bring out the best in each variety, making Berton Vineyards a name synonymous with quality.
Bob Berton, James Ceccato and Jamie Bennett have never been shy of a challenge and setting up a 20,000 tonne winery seemed like the thing to do, so the three families along with Frank Sergi (Foleys Corner) got together in November 2005 and invested in the new (old) winery in Yenda, NSW. And so began the memorable vintage of 2006, and with about ten staff we began the huge task of crushing nearly 16,000 tonnes in a winery that had been stripped to the bare essentials only three months earlier. Those days are now just a foggy memory - a blur of instruction manuals, new staff and long hours, and at this point it was hard to imagine what Berton Vineyards would become. Nearly twenty years later we have lived through some of the toughest years in the Australian wine industry, we have managed to survive and grow the business. Through all this Bob, Jamie and James have been leading the charge with their hands on approach – Berton Vineyards is now one of the 20 biggest wineries in Australia. With Foley's Corner remaining a core component of our wine portfolio, we continue to make wines that embody the resilience, passion, and quality that have defined Berton Vineyards from the very beginning.
Sustainability is at the heart of everything Berton Vineyard does. From using lightweight, eco-friendly bottles to innovative winemaking techniques that reduce energy and water usage, we are committed to protecting the environment while producing exceptional wines. Our dedication to sustainability ensures that every bottle not only tastes great but also respects the land from which it came. Berton Vineyard is a Member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.
