Set in High Eden, a region of rugged beauty between Eden Valley and the Barossa. Our Shiraz is grown on ancient podsolic soils that offer lots of quartz rock and little other sustenance. After five years of heroic effort the vines still looked like rootlings so we started calling it the Bonsai Vineyard.

Tasting Notes
The Bonsai impresses with impenetrable violet hues, it has intense aromas displaying blueberry, plum liquorice and toasty oak. Subtle fine tannins marry perfectly with the soft and elegant palate consisting of dark cherry, plum and white pepper.
Q wine on the 2017 Bonsai: Having seen 20 months in French and American oak, red frog and jubey like aromas skip from the glass before moving on. A firm grip is noticeable but soft and energetic plum and red berry fruit sit behind. That tension holds on as touches of char, oak sweetness and rubs of earthiness peer through. Red apple acidity is followed by drying dusty tannins. Dried herbs and fennel sit on a persistent finish. Slow cooked meals would eat this up. Drink to eight years. Huone Hooke on the 2017: 90 points - Deep, dark red colour with a healthy tinge of purple. The bouquet is quite oak-driven, rich and fresh, while the taste is full-bodied and rich, ripe and slightly mono-dimensional, with good if straightforward flavour. Long finish. This looks as if it would reward a bit of cellaring. Slightly old-fashioned use of oak. “Berton Vineyards make smashing Shiraz in both warm and cool conditions. This is the cool stuff. Full of deep, dark fruit but not afraid to show us a little zest and zing in a red.” Oz Clarke on the 2016 Bonsai “Gorgeous fragrance and plush scented concentration with a lingering trail of scintillating spice.” Ollie Smith on the 2016 Bonsai Comes with grunt and yet there's plenty of detail in layers of scent and flavour, texture and a sense of structure. Expect red and darkberry/plummy fruit scents and flavours with clovey oak character, eucalyptus and brambly things going on. It's bold and bright, palate staining and lip smacking. Bold done very well. 93/100 Mike Bennie on the 2016 Bonsai
