The Real Review - 95 points for our Reserve Botrytis Semillon 2019

95/100

Top Rank

Best Value

5 stars

Full yellow colour with obvious oiliness in the glass, the bouquet redolent of lemon curd, candied citrus peel and acacia honey, while the palate is intense and sweet, soft and oily intexture, the finish rolling long and harmonious. A more elegant style of Riverina sticky. A delicious wine and amazing value.

Australian Alternative Varieties Awards

The 2020 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show (AAVWS) saw Berton Vineyards receive:

Gold - Metal Label 2020 Vermentino
Gold - Metal Label 2020 Viognier
Silver - Metal Label 2019 Durif
and Bronze for the 2020 Winemakers Reserve Fiano and 2020 Berton Vineyards Aranel.

We are delighted with the recognition, particularly for our gold winning whites. The AAVWS encourages growers and winemakers to champion lesser known varieties and wine lovers to be forward thinking with their choices.
AAVWS began in 2001 with just 160 entries, and this year saw over 800 entries in 40 classes, with a high level of competition. The Show aims to provide a different look at wines, and an alternative to the mainstream, providing a showcase for lesser-known or emerging varieties and encouraging people to try something different. The growth in entries is indicative of Australia’s appetite for alternative wine
varieties over the last decade, particularly wine grapes that thrive in our warm climate.

Britain’s 60 best-value wines

High Street Wines judged by an elite panel to select Britain’s 60 best-value wines - with our very own 2019 The Black Shiraz winning the Australian red wines class as one of only three Aussie red wines to be selected. Judges included Matthew Jukes as Head Judge, Sir Ian Botham OBE - ex-England cricketer and wine connoisseur, Emma Rice - Head Winemaker of Hattingley Valley, Michael Caines MBE - Michelin starred hotelier and Jodie Kidd - racing car driver, ex-model and now gastropub owner. “The Black Shiraz was winner in Rhône Varieties class – grenache, syrah (shiraz) and mourvèdre.

Sir Ian is very experienced in the Aussie shiraz world, given that he makes several wines under his own label from this great country, and he was quick to note that this winning wine was indeed ‘great value’. There is tar, liquorice, prunes, blackberries and considerable power here… it is a worthy winner.”

The accolades continue to reaffirm our belief in this wine, cemented by securing gold in seven prestigious shows worldwide, tasted blind against hundreds of other wines.
